Michael A. Smith

Michael A. Smith is a Managing Member and co-founder of Foley & Smith, LLC.  He has over 25 years of experience assisting multinational, national and regional companies in the area of federal taxation.  Prior to co-founding Foley & Smith, LLC, he was a Regional Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (“PwC”) national Tax Projects Delivery Group practice where he spent 8 years overseeing large tax depreciation study projects for Fortune 100 to Middle Market clients.   Mr. Smith also led the Fixed Asset and Capital vs. Repairs segment of WTAS’s (now known as “Andersen”) Asset & Credits Practice.

 

He has been involved in over 500 tax consulting projects focused on maximizing tax depreciation deductions, repair deductions, energy tax credits, and research tax credits.  His experience covers all aspects of a tax consulting project including, but not limited to, initial potential benefit assessment, project design, project implementation, delivery of IRS audit ready supporting documentation, knowledge transfer/recommendations and successful issue resolution upon IRS and/or state examination. 

 

Mr. Smith’s diverse industry experience includes multinational, national and regional companies in air and ground transportation, amusement parks, assisted living, broadcasting (television and radio), chemical manufacturing and processing, commercial and residential rental property (including REITs), data center operations, electronics, financial services, food and beverage, healthcare, hospitality,  information technology, heavy and light manufacturing, oil & gas production, paper products, pharmaceutical, retail, steel manufacturing and utilities.

 

Mr. Smith received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting from Hampton University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law.  He is a CPA, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the Maryland State Bar Association.
